THE FRIENDS OF FORT TRUMBULL

2016 SPEAKER SCHEDULE

HISTORICAL NOTABLES OF NEW LONDON COUNTY
Patriots, Philanthropists, Patrons of the Arts, and Explorers

New London County can take great pride in its historical heritage. For their 2016 program, The Friends of Fort Trumbull will focus upon some of those people who contributed so much to our local culture. We will explore patriots such as Nathan Hale, and Explorers such as Captain Nathaniel Palmer. In addition, we will examine the lasting effects of the generosity of philanthropists such as Joseph and Sebastian Lawrence and Morton Plant.

Some philanthropic families specifically donated their contributions to the Arts. In that category, we will study the Allyn Family and its contributions to the artistic life of the community. Finally, we will explore the influence on their communities of two memorable women - Miss Perkins of the Shaw family and Florence Griswold of Old Lyme. This study will leave us with a clearer understanding of the lasting effect of those historical figures who so greatly impacted this region during their lives and into the future. Join us as we embark on this examination of Historical Notables of New London County.

THE FRIENDS OF FORT TRUMBULL

2015 SPEAKER SCHEDULE

WINDOWS ON THE WORLD OF FORT TRUMBULL

Our 2015 series of programs will be based upon the periods in history that were significant to Fort Trumbull. In 2010, in honor of our first president, John Hanrahan, the Friends commissioned a set of window panels to enlighten visitors to the park as to what is available inside the Visitors Center. Using the window panels in the Visitor’s Center as our guide, we will be planning presentations on the Role of the Fort in The Revolutionary War, The Civil War, World War I & II, and the Cold War. We will also include the History of the Coast Guard at the Fort.
